Fear of Open Spaces (Agoraphobia)
The fear of open spaces (agoraphobia) is thought to be much less common than the other related phobia claustrophobia (fear of small spaces). Many people tell us that when they suffer from agoraphobia they feel very helpless, panicky, anxious, fearful plus vulnerable. Often they speak about the anxiety and fear of the unknown, being out of the safety and security of the known for e.g. own house, own family, own friends, loved ones, a certain room in their home, cctv or panic alarms. All the other associated symptoms of fears and phobias apply here e.g. feeling dizzy, feeling faint, fast heart and pulse, feeling sick etc.
As with all cognitive and behavioural therapy models and methods, the emphasis must always lean toward the lastest, proven, tried and tested CBT approach.
